R18 (Restricted 18) is a film and video classification given by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). It is intended to provide a classification for works that do not breach UK law, but exceed what the BBFC considers acceptable in the 18 category. In practice, this means hardcore pornography.
All non-exempt films sold or distributed within the British must be given a certification by the BBFC in accordance with the Video Recordings Act of 1984. The R18 license is the most restrictive of the certificates, restricting viewing of films in the class to only those who are over 18 years old and selling them in certified intercourse stores, forbids entry to R18-rated movies, and allows the purchase of R18-rated recordings. Legal guidelines
Films that have the R18 certificate may only be screened in authorized theaters and may only be offered for sale on physical media in a licensed sex store.
